I have always found beauty and inspiration in small and
seemingly insignificant items. Take an ordinary wooden match for instance;
it’s not generally an object that invokes amazement or even a moment of
thought. A match is just almost too tiny to bother considering, and at
first glance, a collection of matches seems like just a bunch of wooden
sticks. But closer inspection reveals that each one is an individual. And
a burnt match, one that has fulfilled its purpose, is a match that has
been shaped and formed in a way that is unique to it alone. The burning
produces features, character, and personality, just as the experiences
that we undergo in life forms our unique physical and psychological
traits. In creating a match that is roughly 96 times larger than
life-size, I invite the viewer to enjoy and contemplate the way that an
ordinary object can become a metaphor for the human experience.
